Spinal Fusion

As the name indicates the spinal fusion is the fusion of two spines, so spine fusion is the permanent joining of two or more bones or vertebrae in the spine to stop the movement in between them. the spine fusion is also termed as spondylodesis which is a surgical technique of joining the two or more bones of the spine , so in this broken vertebra is removed and at that place an artificial bone like material is placed which behaves just like the real one and do all the work just like the broken bone.

HOW IT IS DONE

Before the surgery it's good to consult proper about the good and the bad about the surgery to the doctor which is very important for the surgeon to know the condition of the patient, after that first of all anesthesia to make your senses numb and put you in sleepy state but sometimes the dose causes little problem also such as:

  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting
  • Drowsiness
  • Discomfort
  • Shivering
  • Sore throat
  • Irregular heart beats

But these symptoms occurs very rarely, so as the mind and body goes in the sleeping stage the surgery take place in which a vertebra is taken from the bone bank or from the pelvic bone which is used to form a path between those vertebra which are next to each other , for holding the vertebra an artificial implant is used which can be of metal and it is there for the formation of a new bone to grow in between them, the surgery takes several hours to be completed so that once the operation etes over the person is kept under observation to check out the condition of the patient after the surgery.

AFTER SURGERY

Just after the surgery completes the person is kept on bed rest to have rest as much as the person can because the rest is very essential for quick recovery from the surgery , but as you get discharge from the hospital then there is no need to be on bed rest for the whole day, you can walk little bit or sit but you need to wear a back brace until you didn't, and it would take little long time to do all the regular activities which the person use to have before the surgery including :

  • Walking
  • Running
  • Doing house hold works
  • Lifting weight
  • Driving
  • Cycling

RISK IN THIS

The surgery takes place under the guidance of best team to make the process risk free but sometimes some problems generally occurs during the treatment or just after the surgery in which many kinds of complications occurs which may be minor or major some of them are :

  • Unsuccessful surgery
  • Nerve injury
  • Infection
  • Allergy
  • Pulmonary embolism which may be caused due to the blood clotting
  • Spine fusion fails
  • Breaking of the implant which was placed at the place of the damaged one

But they happens very rarely due to great development in the techniques and procedures or surgery.
